After Albert's death, Bertha kept the business going until her subsequent marriage to John J Bell in December 1900. They ran the business for a while, but sometime before 1911 John had changed businesses. He became a Fish Merchant.
By 1918 John had changed his profession yet again, he had now taken up the position of a Stores Clerk.
For a very brief period in 1918 John James Bell Joined the RAF. He joined on 4th May 1918, he was discharged on 8th August the same year. He was described as, 5ft 9 and half inches tall, grey hair, hazel grey eyes with a fresh complexion. He was then aged 45 years.
Alfred's mother, Bertha, was the daughter of William & Susan Sophia Evans (nee Rawlings). Bertha was born in Clun, Shropshire. On the 1881 census her father, William, was described as a 'Hotel Proprietor'. Sometime between 1871 and 1881 the family moved from Clun to Knighton, William took over the running of the Norton Arms Hotel (now the Knighton Hotel)
