Beaufighter VIF X8263 - took off at 14:55 but in very poor visibility flew into the top of a hill at Balig Farm, 3 miles south of Ayr a few minutes later.

The accident occurred just over 3 weeks after Derrick joined the RAFVR. If he was the navigator he must have had more than 3 weeks training.  I have found nothing on his previous service number. These records are most likely still with the M.O.D.

On 27th June 1940, there appeared in the Birmingham Daily Gazette a list of persons who completed examinations in the various faculties of the Birmingham University. Under normal conditions degrees would have been conferred on them, but because of the war the annual Degree Congregation was not held. Derrick Gordon Masters was awarded the Panton Geographical Prize.
