With the 8th Armoured Brigade, the 24th Lancers, Royal Armoured Corps landed on Gold Beach, in the second wave of the Operation Overlord landings, supporting the 50th (Northumbrian) Infantry Division. The regiment landed on 7 June 1944 (D-Day +1). Equipped with Sherman tanks, shortly after landing the regiment was involved in the fighting around Putot-en-Bessin and Villers Bocage.

Frank was originally buried in Le Mesnil Patry in the Calvados area in the Normandy region in northwestern France. His body was exhumed and reburied in the Bayeux War Cemetery on 23rd March 1945.
