SEAMAN DECORATED
Mr. John Royston Evans, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Evans, Byford, Victoria Road, Knighton, a senior radio officer in the Merchant Navy, has been made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (Civil Division) for the "display of great courage and devotion to duty" when his ship was torpedoed and sunk in the South Atlantic. Mr. Evans not only continued to send out wireless messages of distress after the ship had been struck, but also freed the starboard boat, which was hanging by one fall, thus probably saving a number of lives of his shipmates. He was adrift with them for some seven days before being picked up and taken to port, from which he ultimately reached England some time later, and after a short rest returned to duty.
