The Telephone

Radnor Express -18th February 1904

New Telegraph Line.

Permission was granted to the postal authorities to erect an overground telegraph wire along the public road between the Kennels, Knighton, and the turn for Bucknell railway station,

Radnor Express - 24th February 1910

The Telephone - Although nothing definite has been settled with regard to the initiation of a telephone service in the town, there are some hopeful signs that this business boon will be successfully introduced. A post office official who recently visited the town has presented a report to the authorities, and, it is thought that they will eventually connect communication with other exchanges.

Radnor Express - 18th August 1910

The Telephone - What of the telephone? It would be interesting to see the report of the Post Office officials who came to the town to "sound" the tradespeople some time ago with respect to the installation of the telephone.

Radnor Express - 22nd September 1910

The Telephone - In the Post Office telephone directory it is stated that Presteigne and Knighton, and others, which already have the telephone service, are in the "Knighton Circuit."  This seems somewhat anomalous, as Knighton has not yet the telephone installed. Representations for the service have been made by the Urban District Council, but the majority of tradespeople who are interested in the matter do not know what has taken place. Relative to the provision of a telephone service for the town, a correspondent has received a communication from the Postmaster-General to say "that the matter is receiving attention." "Some time may elapse," the letter continues, "before the necessary enquiries can be completed, and definite information given to you on the subject, but another communication will be sent to you as soon as possible." Why does not the Urban Council continue to press the matter forward?

Radnor Express - 24th November 1910

Knighton Telephone - The first pole, for the purpose of connecting the town with Presteigne and Llandrindod by telephone, was erected on Thursday.

The first Pole was erected on Thursday 17th November 1910.

Below is a list of the first numbers given to people and trades of the town. The cost of installing the telephone for some businesses was prohibitively expensive. , sometimes 2 businesses would share a line. This can be seen in 1912 where Tom Norton and E. J. Oldbury both shared line 6. When a number was no longer needed the exchange would assign the number to a new subscriber.
