The Herefordshire Regiment promoted William to Second Lieutenants on 13th August, 1915.

Mrs Whittaker (Burford House, Knighton) was informed on Thursday that her son. Sec.-Lieut. W. R. Whittaker (Herefordshire Regiment) was reported missing, and not wounded, as previously stated.
