Stephen Pugh was born in 1866 in Llananno, Radnorshire to parents Stephen and Mary Pugh (nee Moseley). He was the eldest of 8 children.

Stephen Snr was a farmer in Henfron, Radnorshire, later moving to Cwm-Whitton.

 

Stephen Jnr married Emily Wardell Farr in Knighton in 1895

Stephens occupation is entered as Printer, Stationer and Florist.

 

Over the next 5 years Stephen and Emily added to their family with a further 3 children.

In July 1909 Stephen went into debt, his father sold his busines for him on 9th July. So it was that Stephen, Emily and their children set sail for a new life in Canada. They left Liverpool on 13th August on the Empress of Ireland landing in Quebec on the 19th August.

 

 
On the manifest Stephen enters his profession as a printer although his intended occupation in Canada was to be a farmer.
 
Sadly Stephen's dreams were not to be. He died in Alberta Canada on 3rd November 1909.

MRS. PUGH'S RELIEF FUND

A thoroughly representative committee of the Town and District of Knighton most earnestly solicits the practical sympathy and help of the people of Radnorshire on behalf of the widow and children of the late Mr. Stephen Pugh, printer, &c., of Knighton, who recently went to Canada. A few days after his arrival there he was stricken with typhoid fever, and died, leaving his widow  and children totally unprovided for.

                Subscriptions will be thankfully received by the following:- Rev. D. G. Macpherson, vicar of Knighton and  Chairman of Committee, Mr. J. H. Rimmer, Halfway House, Knighton, and Mr. Edward Probert, Lower Woodhouse, Brampton Brian, Hon. Secretaries, or Mr. William Lewis, High Street, Knighton, Hon. Treasurer.

                The total amount collected will be published when the Subscription List has been closed.

Mrs. Stephen Pugh's Relief Fund.

                At a meeting held last week it was decided to mail a money order for the sum of £65 (the total collected) to Mrs. Stephen Pugh, who resides with her family at Nanton, Alberta.


Emily and her children remained in Canada and can be found on both the 1911 and 1916 Canadian censuses.

 

Emily died on 3rd December 1934 (Her year of birth is incorrect, it should be 1872)  She is buried in Burnsland Cemetery, Calgary, Alberta, Canada

Emily was the daughter of William and Eliza Farr (formerly Wardell, nee Biggs) She was born in West Derby, Lancashire on 17th November 1872.

Hannah Weyman in Australia

Hannah emigrated on 'The Star of the South' which departed Liverpool on 24th April 1857 and reached Melbourne on 5th August 1857.

 

Melbourne - Thursday 9 July 1857

The Star of the South. April 24, for Melbourne, with 412 emigrants, viz. :-18 married couples, 78 single men, 171 single women, and 72 children; equal to 872 statute adults ; 103 being English, 40 Scotch, and 200 Irish. Surgeon, Mr. W. H. Pearse; matron, Hannah Weyman.

Hannah Weyman aged, 27, arrived on 5 Aug. 1857 in Melbourne, Australia from Liverpool aboard the 'Star Of The South'

 

Amongst other passengers on the ship were the Tillidge family from Shoreditch St Leonard, Middlesex. Namely, Susannah age 47 and her 2 daughters, Julia aged 12 and Maria aged 15.

 

Susannah Bronneart married Elias Tillidge on 6th April 1828 at Finsbury St John the Baptist, Islington.

 

Elias died in 1845.

 

They were on their way to be with Susannah's son William Elias Tillidge who had emigrated in 1852. Hannah must have become friends with the Tillidge family during the voyage because in 1859 Hannah Weyman married William Elies Tillidge iin Victoria, Australia.

On the 24th July, at Emerald Hill, the wife of W. E. Tillidge of a son, stillborn.

 

Only 6 days later Hannah Died.

On the 31st July, at Buxton-terrace, Emerald hill, after her confinement, Hannah, the wife of William Elias Tillidge, and daughter of the late W. Weyman, Esq., of Knighton, Radnorshire.

 

NSW Police Gazette for 31 Aug 1870

A Warrant has been issued by the Water Police Bench for the arrest of William Tillidge, charged with deserting his child Edward of 9 years. He the said William Tillidge being able to support the said child. He is about 38 or 40 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, fair hair and whiskers; dressed in dark coat. light tweed trousers and tall white hat. The complainant Thomas Skinner resides at 71 Stanley Street Woolloomooloo. (Since arrested).

William Tillidge brought in by a J Murphy for unsound mind - examined 19th June and disposed of to the police.

 

Randwick Asylum for Destitute Children - Discharge.

On Edward's discharge paper it says 'William to have his son on payment of 20 pound on or before 31st December 1874' - they were both discharged to their father with consent of the House Committee 5th January 1874.

 

William Herbert TILLIDGE married Annie Maria CURRAN in NSW in 1885. They produced a daughter Annie in 1886.
